Most musicians can no longer rely on record labels and record sales to fund their careers. Streaming services expose artists to new listeners, but steady income from these sources isn't likely.

As a result, musicians are returning to the Renaissance patron model to generate financing for their work. Once again, it is up to those who view art as essential to the human experience to become artistic financiers.
